Is it time to change your Spark Plug on your Quad or Dirt Bike

Is changing the spark plug an easy Job?

We love riding our dirt and quad bikes, but unfortunately some maintenance jobs are needed from time to time for your bike to perform better and last longer.

When changing a spark plug on a dirt bike or quad bike, sometimes you may have to remove the fuel tank, disconnect the spark plug lead and replace the old spark plug, with a new same specification plug. With most of our bikes, you can do this quite simply, without removing any major parts.

When the spark plug is contaminated, you will find a buildup of carbon and this creates a poor performing spark that results, in a rough idle and may have difficulty getting it started, when cold. If you find that your bike is running rough, or losing power, you should check your spark plug.

We suggest depending on the use, check your spark plug every 40 - 50 hours of operating to check its condition.

To replace the spark plug in 5 easy steps | Make sure the bike and ignition is off.

  • Get access to the area where the spark plug is situated, this can be found in your manual or if you can see it without obstruction all the better.
  • Remove the spark plug cap, this maybe a little stuck so give it a good wiggle. (Check the wire for any wearing issues)
  • Remove the old spark plug by rotating counterclockwise with the correct spanner.
  • Get the new spark plug and check that it matches the required specification and size as the one you have removed, checking the text spec matches on the white part of the plug.
  • Install the new Spark plug by threading it in where the old plug came out, and tighten by hand, then use the spanner very gently to tighten (do not over tighten), put the spark plug cap back on.

Now you are ready to test the bike and your bike should be running better already.
